SKUGGA Sunglasses with variable electronic tint control launches on Crowdfunding platform Kickstarter today

SKUGGA are sunglasses with dynamic tinting control. The tint in SKUGGA is either controlled automatically depending on the surrounding light, or manually through an App in your Smartphone. Today, SKUGGA starts their 30-day campaign on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, letting early backers pre-order their product to help push SKUGGA in to mass production.

Although SKUGGA is a high-tech product on the inside, the slim high class design will surprise you. Award-winning product designer Mikael Ericsson and the SKUGGA team have created a unisex design with high quality details and materials. Top fashion designer Naim Josefi has been advising the team during the process.

The tint functionality in SKUGGA Eyewear is made possible with sophisticated liquid crystal (LC) technology from the Swedish company LC-Tec. Their electrically controlled switchable filters are highly suitable for use as tint technology. A low voltage applied to the filter defines the amount of light that is passed through it, and the amount of tint can be changed from one level to another within a few milliseconds.

LC-Tec is today one of the leading suppliers of 3D projection technology for the world-wide cinema industry with over 2 000 installations of the patented and Disney-approved PolarSpeed®/DepthQ® polarization modulator. SKUGGA is controlled by the new CC2640 from Texas Instruments, a wireless microcontroller targeting Bluetooth Smart applications. The CC2640 contains a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 processor for the SKUGGA control and the Bluetooth Low Energy controller is embedded into ROM and run partly on an ARM Cortex®-M0 processor.


Behind the project is the experienced team of Top Notch Design & Engineering, a Swedish company with focus on advanced product development.

In order to develop this complex product, the SKUGGA-team has used SOLIDWORKS Premium 3D-CAD suit. SOLIDWORKS is used both for the mechanical and the aesthetic design, enabling a fast and reliable development process.

During the development of SKUGGA numerous prototypes has been produced. Frames, temples and details for both technical and aesthetical prototypes have all been printed in an Objet24 PolyJet 3D-printer from Stratasys

LC-Tec Displays AB och Top Notch Design & Engineering inleder samarbete kring dimbara solglasögon. Top Notch Design har under en tid arbetat med design och utveckling av dimbara solglasögon under varumärket SKUGGA ( LC-Tec har tidigare arbetat med olika glasögonapplikationer och bolagets switchbara filter bedöms vara lämpade för användning i solglasögon. Bolagen inleder därför ett samarbete syftande till att kundanpassa LC-Tecs teknik för Top Notchs solglasögon. Parallellt med detta arbete kommer Top Notch genom s.k. ”crowdfunding” att söka finansiering för första volymproduktion av kompletta dimbara solglasögon.

Top Notch Design & Engineering turns to Kickstarter with Dynamic Sunglasses


Swedish company Top Notch Design & Engineering has during the past 12 months been working on the challenge of merging several existing technologies into a novel, highly designed lifestyle product: SKUGGA Eyewear – Sunglasses with Dynamic Tinting Control.

The product will be launched on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter in May 2015, hoping backers will pre-order and help push SKUGGA into production.

SKUGGA uses an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the tint. The tint level can be personalized using the SKUGGA-app via Bluetooth. SKUGGA has no buttons or complex settings. It is simply controlled by swinging the right temple back and forth. And, they turn off when you close them.

Although SKUGGA is a high-tech product on the inside, the slim high class design will surprise you. For users of prescription glasses, SKUGGA’s frames make it possible to integrate prescription lenses from your local optician, so you can wear your glasses around the clock. For your convenience, the sunglasses are equipped with wireless charging through inductive components.

SKUGGA protects your eyes 100 % from UV light, even when not tinted. However, it is not just your eyes that are sensitive for UV light, so is your skin. An integrated UV-meter makes it possible, via the app, to log your daily UV exposure, helping you to stay safe and within recommended exposure limits.

Highly energy-efficient dynamic tinting technology in combination with an ultra-low power 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller provides for excellent battery life. SKUGGA will have a usage time of approximately 12 hours in activated auto mode.
