November Update

The search for the perfect manufacturing partners continues, and so far we are very optimistic in finding partners that can produce the high quality we demand of SKUGGA. SKUGGA is a complex product  As for now, it looks like the product will be produced partly here in Sweden and partly overseas. Meanwhile we have started the very exciting but time consuming task of filing several patents. We are very excited to be able to present our new solutions with you as soon as everything is filed and ready!
Last week one of our long lost colleagues came back to work with us in-office – Welcome back Jonas! Jonas is one of the main intellects behind the technology in SKUGGA, and will from now on work full time in the project! Jonas will take on the PCB, charging and battery and fine tune everything for production. We are so very happy to have him back.
Two weeks ago we had the joy of visiting our supplier of LC-filters for a tour around their production line – and we have to say: Wow, impressive and complex things! We wish we could show you more of this set up, but meanwhile please enjoy these couple of SKUGGA filters freshly from the production line.

New Prototypes

SKUGGA has now received the following improvements, and we are very proud of the new spectacles!
  • New leaner frame and temples on original design
  • Further developed the software controlling the adjustable tint
  • The LCD-filters are now bent in a base curve 6
  • The tint now fades totally step less
  • The smartphone application is up and running

Our 3D printer has gone warm all week printing all the new prototypes. Furthermore, we have welded a few hundred cables, assembled SKUGGAusing a magnifying glass, glued sun films, bent plastic lenses, spray painted hundreds of details – and finally we also managed to get our smartphone application to work perfectly!

Check out our new Prototype-video HERE!

Below you can see the new lean design of the original SKUGGA frame.

Happening right now with SKUGGA

SKUGGA Biljard_cleanDuring the spring and summer we have made a number of improvements to the technology. The LCD-filters are changed to the very latest liquid crystal technology on the market today, which results in a smoother stepless tint. We will not be satisfied until we have the best product on the market. What remains to be further developed is the smartphone application to manually control the glasses through Bluetooth and the UV-meter.

But don’t worry – everything is fully working, and we are almost all set! Next week, 25th- 27th of August 2016 we will launch our new prototypes at the Stockholm’s yearly Optician Fair. Friday, we will hold a workshop with the following topics: ”Can smart glasses be stylish?” and  ”What is the potential of the new technology?”.

We will update our Facebook page during the three days. Follow us on Skuggaeyewear.

We are cancelling our Kickstarter Campaign

BANNER SB2 NOW CANCELED

Hi Guys!

I’m writing this post because we are very sorry to announce that we are cancelling the campaign today. It has been a very hard decision to make and the reasons we decided to cancel are many. This is our first KS campaign and we have learned a lot on this journey and how we can make things better.

This whole project started with an idea about a cool gadget. However, while developing this product we realized how comfortable it is with controlled tint. This is really a game changer; we will never go back to static shades again. We have worked so hard on developing this product and creating this campaign that we forgot to put our heart in communicating our story and vision. We have also missed how difficult it is to reach out in the big black hole of media buzz. But most of all, we have received tons of very useful feedback from you, our fans on how we can develop this product in to something much better. We are a small self-funded company with an excellent team and brilliant people behind it. When we started to execute this project, it was only a side project. But it has now grown and we believe the time is here for this kind of technology and that we are approaching our vision; to make wearables that people really want to wear!

We are now cancelling this project to make necessary changes and to find capital to re-launch with a more refined product during February 2016. If you have suggestions of investors, we would be very eager to hear.

If you want to stay tuned, please sign up for our newsletter under Home.
We won’t stop until people really love wearing and using our SKUGGA Sunglasses, the new era of shades is here to stay!

Best regards from

Mikael Ericsson and the whole SKUGGA team!

SKUGGA Sunglasses with variable electronic tint control launches on Crowdfunding platform Kickstarter today

SKUGGA are sunglasses with dynamic tinting control. The tint in SKUGGA is either controlled automatically depending on the surrounding light, or manually through an App in your Smartphone. Today, SKUGGA starts their 30-day campaign on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, letting early backers pre-order their product to help push SKUGGA in to mass production.

Award-winning product designer Mikael Ericsson and the SKUGGA team have created a unisex design with high quality details and materials. Top fashion designer Naim Josefi has been advising the team during the process.

  • Automatically adjusts the tint according to your current environment
    • Manually adjustable tint by using the SKUGGA-app
    • No buttons or ports – SKUGGA charges through induction
    • Sensor to log your daily UV-light exposure
    • Frames adapted for the possibility of integrating prescription lenses
    • Protects 100 % from UVA and UVB, even when at the lightest tint

TINT TECHNOLOGY

The tint functionality in SKUGGA Eyewear is made possible with sophisticated liquid crystal (LC) technology from the Swedish company LC-Tec. Their electrically controlled switchable filters are highly suitable for use as tint technology. A low voltage applied to the filter defines the amount of light that is passed through it, and the amount of tint can be changed from one level to another within a few milliseconds.

LC-Tec is today one of the leading suppliers of 3D projection technology for the world-wide cinema industry with over 2 000 installations of the patented and Disney-approved PolarSpeed®/DepthQ® polarization modulator. LC-Tec is a publicly traded company, listed on the NGM Nordic MTF stock exchange market.

“We are always looking for novel applications in which our technology can add value, and the SKUGGA Eyewear project enables us to enter a new exciting field. We look forward to a close collaboration with the talented people at SKUGGA.”
– Dr. Jesper Osterman, Managing Director at LC-Tec

SKUGGA is controlled by the new CC2640 from Texas Instruments, a wireless microcontroller targeting Bluetooth Smart applications. The CC2640 contains a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 processor for the SKUGGA control and the Bluetooth Low Energy controller is embedded into ROM and run partly on an ARM Cortex®-M0 processor.

DEVELOPMENT

Behind the project is the experienced team of Top Notch Design & Engineering, a Swedish company with focus on advanced product development.

In order to develop this complex product, the SKUGGA-team has used SOLIDWORKS Premium 3D-CAD suit. SOLIDWORKS is used both for the mechanical and the aesthetic design, enabling a fast and reliable development process.

During the development of SKUGGA numerous prototypes has been produced. Frames, temples and details for both technical and aesthetical prototypes have all been printed in an Objet24 PolyJet 3D-printer from Stratasys

“By printing the SKUGGA-prototypes in our Objet24 PolyJet from Stratsys, we can achieve prints with photo finish quality and outstanding tolerances and details, making the prototypes really close to the final product”
– Daniel Ericsson, The SKUGGA-Team

Top Notch Design & Engineering turns to Kickstarter with Dynamic Sunglasses

skugga-eyewear-glases

Swedish company Top Notch Design & Engineering has during the past 12 months been working on the challenge of merging several existing technologies into a novel, highly designed lifestyle product: SKUGGA Eyewear – Sunglasses with Dynamic Tinting Control.

The product will be launched on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter in May 2015, hoping backers will pre-order and help push SKUGGA into production.

SKUGGA uses an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the tint. The tint level can be personalized using the SKUGGA-app via Bluetooth. SKUGGA has no buttons or complex settings. It is simply controlled by swinging the right temple back and forth. And, they turn off when you close them.

Although SKUGGA is a high-tech product on the inside, the slim high class design will surprise you. Award-winning product designer Mikael Ericsson and the SKUGGA team have created a unisex design with high quality details and materials. Top fashion designer Naim Josefi has been advising the team during the process.

For users of prescription glasses, SKUGGA’s frames make it possible to integrate prescription lenses from your local optician, so you can wear your glasses around the clock. For your convenience, the sunglasses are equipped with wireless charging through inductive components.

SKUGGA protects your eyes 100 % from UV light, even when not tinted. However, it is not just your eyes that are sensitive for UV light, so is your skin. An integrated UV-meter makes it possible, via the app, to log your daily UV exposure, helping you to stay safe and within recommended exposure limits.

Highly energy-efficient dynamic tinting technology in combination with an ultra-low power 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller provides for excellent battery life. SKUGGA will have a usage time of approximately 12 hours in activated auto mode.
